My crown came off. What do I do?

A crown that falls off needs prompt attention — but in many cases it can be re-cemented the same day. Here's what to do right now.

What to do immediately

  • Keep the crown — do not throw it away
  • Rinse the crown gently with water
  • Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth
  • Temporary dental cement (available at most pharmacies) can be used to re-seat the crown temporarily
  • Call our office as soon as possible
Do not swallow the crown. If you accidentally swallow it, it will typically pass without harm — but call us so we can plan a replacement.

Why a loose or missing crown needs prompt care

The tooth underneath a crown has been shaped and reduced — it is not as strong as a natural tooth and is vulnerable without its crown. Leaving it unprotected can lead to:

  • Sensitivity to temperature and pressure
  • Decay forming on the exposed tooth structure
  • Cracking or fracturing of the prepared tooth
  • Difficulty re-fitting the original crown if the tooth shifts

Can the crown be re-cemented?

Often, yes. If the crown and the underlying tooth are both intact and undamaged, the crown can frequently be re-cemented at your appointment. If the tooth has developed new decay, or if the crown itself is cracked or worn, a new dental crown may be needed.

Bring the crown with you

Even if the crown looks damaged, bring it to your appointment. We can assess whether it is still usable or whether a new one needs to be fabricated.
