Why wisdom teeth cause problems

Wisdom teeth (third molars) typically emerge in the late teens or early twenties. Because most people do not have enough room in their jaw for these teeth, they often become impacted — meaning they are unable to fully erupt through the gumline. This can lead to pain, infection, and damage to neighboring teeth.

Signs your wisdom tooth may need to come out

Persistent pain or pressure at the back of the jaw
Swelling or tenderness in the gum around the tooth
Difficulty opening your mouth fully
Bad taste or odor near the back of the mouth (sign of infection)
The tooth is only partially erupted, creating a flap of gum tissue that traps food
Crowding or shifting of nearby teeth
Cyst formation around the impacted tooth

Does every wisdom tooth need to be removed?

No. If a wisdom tooth has fully erupted, is properly positioned, and can be cleaned effectively, it may not need to be removed. However, wisdom teeth that are impacted, partially erupted, infected, or causing problems with neighboring teeth are generally better removed sooner rather than later.
