Most patients feel back to normal within 1–2 weeks after a tooth extraction. The gum tissue closes over the socket within 2–3 weeks, and full bone healing takes 3–6 months. Wisdom tooth extractions and surgical removals may take longer than simple extractions.
Healing Timeline by Stage
Extraction healing happens in predictable stages. Understanding what to expect at each stage helps you recognize normal healing versus a potential complication.
- Days 1–3: A blood clot forms in the socket. This is the foundation of healing — protecting it is the most important thing you can do in the first 72 hours.
- Days 3–7: The clot stabilizes, swelling peaks around day 2–3 then begins to subside, and the gum tissue starts to close over the socket.
- Weeks 1–2: Most discomfort resolves. The gum tissue continues to close and the socket becomes less visible.
- Weeks 2–4: The gum tissue is largely healed. The socket is no longer open, though the area may still feel slightly different from surrounding tissue.
- Months 3–6: The underlying bone remodels and fills in. This phase is not visible or painful — it happens below the surface.
Signs of Normal vs. Concerning Healing
Normal healing involves mild soreness, some swelling, and slight bleeding in the first 24 hours. Contact your dentist if you experience severe or worsening pain after day 3 (which may indicate dry socket), fever, pus or discharge from the socket, or swelling that is getting worse rather than better after the first few days.
