Can a Tooth Be Pushed Back Into Place?

Published: October 2026Updated: October 2026Written by Merchants Walk Dental Team
Quick Answer

A knocked-out permanent tooth can sometimes be reimplanted if you act within 30 minutes. Handle the tooth by the crown, rinse gently, try to reinsert it, and get to a dentist immediately. Baby teeth should NOT be reimplanted. A tooth that is pushed sideways or deeper into the gum should be repositioned only by a dentist — do not try to move it yourself.

🚨

If a Permanent Tooth Is Knocked Out — Act Fast

1

Pick up the tooth by the crown

Hold the tooth by the white crown portion only. Never touch the root — the root surface contains cells needed for reimplantation.

2

Rinse gently if dirty

If the tooth is dirty, rinse it briefly with water. Do not scrub it, dry it, or wrap it in a tissue.

3

Try to reinsert it

If possible, gently reinsert the tooth into its socket and hold it in place by biting softly on clean gauze. This is the best way to keep it viable.

4

Store it in milk if you cannot reinsert it

If you cannot reinsert the tooth, place it in a glass of milk or hold it between your cheek and gum to keep it moist. Do not store it in water.

5

Get to a dentist within 30 minutes

Time is critical. The sooner the tooth is reimplanted by a dentist, the better the chance of success.

Important: Baby Teeth Are Different

If a baby tooth is knocked out, do NOT try to reimplant it. Reinserting a baby tooth can damage the developing permanent tooth underneath. Control any bleeding with gentle pressure and call your dentist for guidance.
