After a root canal, mild soreness and sensitivity are normal for a few days. The tooth is typically restored with a temporary filling first, followed by a permanent crown at a follow-up appointment. Most patients return to normal activities the same day or the next day.
Recovery Timeline
The area will be numb for 2–4 hours. Avoid eating until the numbness wears off. Mild soreness may begin as the anesthetic fades.
Soreness and sensitivity are most noticeable. Over-the-counter pain relievers (ibuprofen or acetaminophen) are usually sufficient. Avoid chewing on the treated side.
Discomfort should be improving noticeably. If pain is worsening or you develop swelling or fever, contact your dentist.
Most patients feel fully normal. A follow-up appointment is typically scheduled to place the permanent crown.
