Why Does a Tooth Hurt After a Filling?
Several factors can cause discomfort after a filling. Most are temporary and resolve on their own.
Normal post-procedure sensitivity
The tooth and surrounding tissue were manipulated during the procedure. Mild sensitivity to cold, heat, or biting is common for a few days and usually resolves within two weeks.
The filling is too high (occlusal interference)
If the filling is even slightly too tall, it changes your bite and puts extra pressure on the tooth. This is one of the most common causes of post-filling pain and is easily fixed by adjusting the bite.
Pulpitis (nerve inflammation)
Deep decay or the drilling process can irritate the pulp, causing inflammation. Reversible pulpitis resolves on its own; irreversible pulpitis causes persistent pain and may require a root canal.
Cracked tooth
Sometimes a crack in the tooth is discovered during the filling procedure, or the drilling process reveals a pre-existing crack. Cracks can cause sharp pain when biting.
Referred pain from an adjacent tooth
Pain can sometimes feel like it is coming from the filled tooth when it is actually originating from a neighboring tooth. Your dentist can help identify the true source.
When Should I Call My Dentist?
Call your dentist if: pain is severe or worsening rather than improving, sensitivity persists beyond four to six weeks, you have spontaneous pain that occurs without a trigger, the tooth is painful to bite on consistently, or you notice swelling. These signs may indicate the filling needs adjustment or the tooth requires further treatment.
