What Should I Do If My Tooth Chips?

Published: October 2026Updated: October 2026Written by Merchants Walk Dental Team
Quick Answer

If your tooth chips, rinse your mouth with warm water, save any broken pieces if possible, and call your dentist. For small chips with no pain, you can wait a day or two for a non-urgent appointment. For large chips, significant pain, or a broken tooth, call right away — same-day care may be needed to protect the tooth and relieve discomfort.

What To Do Right Away

1

Rinse with warm water

Gently rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area and remove any debris or blood.

2

Save the broken piece

If you can find the fragment, place it in a small container of milk or saliva. While it usually cannot be reattached, your dentist may want to see it.

3

Control any bleeding

Apply gentle pressure with a clean gauze or cloth if there is bleeding from the gum tissue around the tooth.

4

Protect sharp edges

If the chip has left a sharp edge that is cutting your tongue or cheek, you can temporarily cover it with dental wax (available at most pharmacies) or a piece of sugarless gum.

5

Manage pain if needed

Over-the-counter ibuprofen can help with pain and inflammation. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the tooth or gum tissue.

6

Call your dentist

Even a small chip should be evaluated. Call us to schedule an appointment — we will help you determine how urgently you need to be seen based on your symptoms.

🦷

Not All Chips Are the Same

Minor enamel chip

Low urgency

A small chip that only affects the outer enamel layer. Usually painless. Can often be smoothed or repaired with bonding at a routine appointment.

Moderate chip into dentin

Moderate urgency

A chip that reaches the dentin (the softer layer beneath enamel) may cause sensitivity to temperature and pressure. Should be repaired within a few days to prevent further damage and decay.

Large chip or broken cusp

High urgency

A significant portion of the tooth has broken off. The tooth is structurally compromised and may need a crown. Call us promptly — the longer you wait, the more the tooth is at risk.

Chip exposing the nerve

Emergency

Severe, immediate pain or extreme sensitivity usually means the chip has reached the pulp (nerve). This requires same-day care — a root canal may be needed to relieve the pain and save the tooth.

Call Us Right Away If You Have These Signs

Severe or throbbing pain

Extreme sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure

Swelling in the gum, cheek, or jaw

Bleeding that does not stop

A large piece of the tooth has broken off

Fever or bad taste in your mouth
